Life at Fort Lewis College (FLC) allows me to reflect on the value of a cultural education. Despite only making up about 2% of the national population, 30% Native American takes up FLC student body. FLC displays concerns for Native American community by providing educational courses and scholarship programs that promote the people of America’s indigenous culture.
When I went to study in the U.K. at the University of East Anglia (UEA), I received a different global perspective from the American education system. Viewing the world from an outside university was an interesting experience, especially during the 2016 election, as I saw different reactions to the events going on in my home country. One of the things that I was particularly interesting as an American abroad was how active the Black Lives Matter Movement is in the U.K. The timing of attending UEA during the nation's Black History Month provided a new perspective about international diversity and common conflicts for diaspora groups around the world.
