Global Perspective:
Having the opportunity to study in different institutions through FIU has increased my perspectives in about different communities on Earth. In the past two years, I have experienced living a vibrant Latino community in Miami, watched a Native American community in Durango, Colorado continuing to fight for their existence, and viewed how the United Kingdom is learning to integrate the diverse members of their society into a new community. These moments in my academic career on helped me understand the future of the world as a Global Citizen, where different groups that wield various levels of influence all interact in a world where borders and boundaries are ever changing.
Global Awareness:
After taking Global Learning classes and studying across the country and the world, my awareness about the big and little picture topics has expanded. For example, Immigration is a topic close to my heart. As an immigrant from Colombia, I follow topics dealing with global migration closely. Especially in the current international climate, my training as a Global Citizen at FIU allows me to understand all the perspectives considered in migration policies, from the motivations of the men and women who leave their countries to find opportunities in other lands, to the government officials who want to make sure that the best and the most responsible people are entering their borders. Nevertheless, one topic that I believe that is not discussed enough, but through greater awareness, I became engaged with is, the crime of human trafficking in the modern world. Especially living in Miami where it is a location where the rate of modern day slavery is high. Understanding the broader topic of immigration provided me with the skills and compassion to seek out information about how criminal operate in this world.
Global Engagement:
I have decided to pursue my masters in higher education to continue helping students become more engaged with their communities. Once one takes the step to learn about their own community, they can start taking bigger steps to learn about others as well as helping to develop these communities as well. They could start to become active by joining clubs at school, such as myself where we ended up volunteering by helping the homeless community as well as spreading knowledge on ways to help them out.
